School, Parent, and Family Engagement Plan
East Junior High School ♦ West Memphis School District
The success of all students is a function of several components and one key component is the effective partnership of school and home. Therefore, East Junior High School has developed the following Parental Involvement Plan as a joint effort of teachers, parents, staff and the community and in compliance with Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA) section 1118. To foster and encourage parental involvement, East Junior High School will:
Communicate with parents in a variety of ways about our instructional program to increase parental support through
A published monthly newsletter and calendar to inform parents of school events and activities including school wide assessments, semester and nine week exam dates, and all state assessment dates.
A maintained school website that will house classroom websites for each teacher. Through this website parents will also have access to Parent Viewer that will give parents access to view their child’s grades using a special PIN number.
Due to Covid-19, the student handbook will be provided online at www.wmsd.net to provide parents and students a description and explanation of the curriculum in use at East Junior High School, forms of academic assessment used to measure student progress. In addition, other guidelines regarding health and safety issues will be addressed on our website, Facebook, and local media.
Meet regularly with parents (including 2 parent/teacher conferences) at varying times and build staff and parent capacity to increase opportunities for parental involvement through
Two parent teacher conferences to pick up report cards and to meet with your child’s teachers to discuss your child’s progress. These conferences are scheduled for evenings on October 19, 2020 and March 18, 2021. Due to Covid-19, all PTC’s are subject to change depending on mandates from the Arkansas Health Department (ADH).
Monthly parent involvement meetings held to give parents an overview of what students will learn, how students are assessed, and what parents can expect for your child’s education. Depending on guidelines from the CDC and ADH, parent meetings may be held virtually.
All teachers and administrators participated in two (2) hours of staff development on effective parent involvement strategies in the 2014-2015 school year and will continue to do so every fourth school year thereafter.
Participation in: Open House, Parent Workshops, Afterschool Programs, Band and Choir Concerts, Curriculum Nights, Awards Day Presentations, Freshman Academy Ceremonies, and Athletic Events will all be tentatively scheduled pending recommendations from the CDC and ADH.
Provide information to parents about volunteer opportunities.
The school will provide opportunities for parents and community members to support the instructional program through sponsored school clubs and activities.
Parents will be provided a list of school volunteer opportunities through Parent Involvement Meetings, Informational Packets, School Calendars and Facebook communication.
Parents will be provided instruction on how to incorporate developmentally appropriate learning activities in the home.
There will be a volunteer resource book in the office for parents to sign up to volunteer as they are available. (Post Covid-19 regulations).
Create a School-Parent-Compact with input from school staff, parents and students.
School staff, parents, and students will develop a school-parent-student compact that will outline responsibilities of stakeholders to improve student academic improvement toward achieving the state’s high academic standards. All stakeholders will sign the compact pending approval from the ADH. An electronic copy of the parent student compact will be available online at www.wmsd.net.
Provide opportunities for parents to be involved in the development, implementation and evaluation of the schoolwide school improvement plan and the Annual Title I Meeting to engage them in the decision-making processes regarding the school’s Title I, Part A Program.
The school will recruit East Junior High alumni for an alumni advisory commission to provide advice and guidance for school improvement programs.
The school maintains a Parent Involvement Committee with membership open to all parents and guardians to foster parental and community involvement within the school.
The school will involve parents, students, and community members in the school improvement planning committees.
Provide resources for parents.
The school will provide Informational packets that describe the school’s parental involvement program; recommended role of the parent, student, teacher and school; ways parents can get involved in the school and their child’s education; activities planned throughout the school year; and the plan for meaningful, two-way and regular communication with your child’s teacher(s) and school administrators.
A parent center will be maintained that will contain resources that provide assistance to parents in understanding the state’s academic content standards and student achievement standards, local academic assessments and how to monitor a child’s progress and work with teachers to improve the achievement of their children.
The student handbook will contain the school’s process for resolving parental concerns including how to define a problem, whom to approach first, and how to develop solutions. The handbook is located online at www.wmsd.net under the Parents and Students tab.
The principal has designated Mrs.Dionne Harris, school guidance counselor as the parent facilitator for East Junior High. She may be contacted at 870-735-2081, Monday through Friday from 8:00am to 3:30pm.
Provide parents with the opportunity to evaluate the school’s parental involvement efforts.
Parents, staff, and students will be invited to complete a comprehensive needs assessment in April 2021.
The Parental Involvement Committee will evaluate relevant data to determine the success of the Parent Involvement Plan: growth in parent participation in meetings and workshops; effectiveness of strategies; level of parent engagement in activities to support student academic growth.
Utilize the parent interest surveys to plan and implement parental involvement activities throughout the year.
Parents will have the opportunity to complete parent interest surveys during the fall semester and spring semester through google forms and PTC’s on October 19, 2020 and March 18, 2021 pending approval from CDC and ADH recommendations.
Results of surveys will be used to plan parental involvement activities for the year.
Seminars will be conducted to inform parents about how to be involved in the decisions affecting course selection, career planning, transition issues, and preparation for post-secondary opportunities. Strategies for responsible parenting will be discussed during parent meetings. Support resources for parents will be advertised through digital means such as google forms, Facebook,emails and the website.
Conduct the Annual Title I Meeting.
The school will conduct an Annual Title I Meeting for all parents in the Fall of 2020 pending guidelines from the CDC and ADH. Otherwise, a virtual meeting will be held.
The annual Title I Meeting is separate from any other meeting or activity and will provide a description of the school curriculum, interim and state assessments used to measure student progress and information on proficiency level students are expected to meet.
The agenda, sign-in sheet and minutes for the annual Title I meeting will be maintained. If the meeting is virtual, the meeting will be recorded for documentation purposes.
